In this Mini Series, we take a look at the Google Keyboard Gboard. This series was born out of the simple idea how when I type I hit the emoji key by accident - I went looking for a solution and in the process found a whole interesting bag full of nice surprises.

As an overview, expect these topics:
- Themes (Part 1)
- Preferences
- Emoji Hide
- sounds: type, backspace, enter
- Physical Keyboard with Virtual Overlay
- Alt for Emoji on Physical
- Space Bar Swipe, backspace swipe

As usual, I'm using Android 7.0 on a Moto G4

Our mobile keyboard is one of the main ways we communicate and record ourselves, for some fascinating background go take a look at The Typewriter (In the 21st Century) and you can also watch the trailer

Having purchased a new Zoom H2n on the 11 July 2018, it's now been 30 days of learning and testing. Here's a small mini series with plenty of examples - four videos with total play time of 25 minutes.

The Zoom H2n as a model was launched in 2011, so not a new item at all - yet I would say an ESSENTIAL device if you are passionate about audio recording.

Of course if you follow this blog and my youtube channel, you will have seen I bought a Zoom H1 in 2013. And a lot of audio for me has been recording with my Moto G4 inbuilt microphone.

There are a few more paragraphs and links at the bottom of each video.
In this post we are going to explore Desktop Video Editing.

Videos 1 to 6 on the playlist are the Mini Series to help you learn while the remainder give some background on how to use Vegas Movie Studio.

These days I use a variety of methods to produce videos for youtube like screen recordings on mobile and desktop, then editing on mobile using PowerDirector or on Desktop with Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 15.0

Hashtags at YouTube have been around for a long while - yet what's new, how to add a hashtag into a title or description text and have those hashtags appear above the title.

Used in moderation quite useful, so what's the best way? I am leaning towards a three step approach

channel name #themikedownespage

subject, topic like #GoogleEarth

subtitle like #Measure

Any more hashtags a too many in my opinion. What's alarming how google youtube have a limit of 50 hashtags - I say alarming as in my view, that limit should be MUCH lower - like 5 I would say.

Edit Fri 27 July 18 - Rules..

1, if hashtag(s) in title, then TITLE ONLY
2, if title and text description then TITLE ONLY
3, if no title, hashtag(s) in text description then ABOVE TITLE ONLY

therefore hashtags cannot be in both TITLE and ABOVE TITLE (?)

I'm working on a new site called the mike downes page, postes this in the About area, it reads..

From the very beginning my YouTube channel has been called The Mike Downes Page. That was on 8 Oct 2010.

At this time of writing, today the 6 July 18, there are 953 public videos spread across around 150 playlists with 1 million views and 1.3 million watched minutes.

At youtube.com/mikedownes you will see my name as the public custom URL, yet it's really called themikedownespage, just click and see the name hidden in this URL.

Although any youtube channel gives the channel some tabs like: Home, Videos, Playlists, Discussion and About, it's still quite limited to display what you need or talk about the videos that people are finding useful or even forgotten.

Think of a channel as a library or a store - there are lots there yet if not presented nicely, it's very hard to locate what you are looking for - just image an internet without a Search Engine /o\

Even more troublesome is how youtube will be watched across mobile, tablet, desktop and a big TV. For a mindful video creator, they need to think about matching what and how they make a video to how it will be watched (see below for some data).

For me, I use two phrases:

at the mike downes page we make videos to help people learn and

come visit and learn at the mike downes page

To best understand it all, think of my channel and this site as one big page - I especially like how old newspapers look, see this one called the World News Herald - full of optimism and promise.

There are loads of images of old newspapers. All of them look back to a day when reading the news and learning about the world was so innocent.

For some reason on this theme I'm reminded of the World's Fair in the era of the 1850s to early 1900s, 'World Expositions with technological inventions and advancements.

Fast forward to 2018, and are we not seeing the same happening all over again with the smart phone and the wizardry it can achieve? Yet in my view, the average user has a magnificent phone, yet use it as little more than a thing to talk and text from - it's so much more, like a thousand times more than that.

As a timeline, I started teaching in UK Schools September 1998, the same time as Google was founded. I saw the internet grow, and as I did, I taught it to seven to eleven year old children.

Mr Downes in the classroom, circa 2006

For a look back then, read this news article from 2006 of me in a school classroom in Warwick, England. There was no internet in that classroom back then. I had to wheel in a large data projector on a trolley and attached it to a laptop preloaded anything I wished to teach.

I spent twenty years in and around the UK Primary School Classroom. I started out in 1992 teaching black and white photography on Summer Camp in North Carolina, USA - an experience that has never left me. From there, qualified teacher status from the University of Warwick, and an honours degree.

In April 2010, I started a blog called what's in kenilworth. It was my attempt to document what was in this small Warwickshire town. I also commented on local changes and issues as they happened.

There are now 1,031 published posts, although after the first few years, I started posting much wider issues like changes in social policing and topics on technology and video making.

From early 2012, I was invited to test for Google Hangouts on prelease software. In the last six years I have tested lots of software while looking to brainstorm and innovate then feedback to Google and other companies.

Getting back to youtube, many of my first videos were nothing more than mere video tests. That developed into making short videos to give people a few tips on how to solve a problem or learn a new skill on something they were finding difficult.

An example is the How to clean audio with audacity - it's the most watched video at the mike downes page.

Now youtube.com/mikedownes has passed one million views and growing all the time, I'd like to add more structure on how I make video to help people learn. I'm in progress right now creating this new site.

All of my top videos are made by recording my screen either on android or windows desktop.

One thing you will notice - I do not appear on camera. You and me are side by side looking at the lesson or the problem to be solved. I am not looking to entertain and get people to like me, if it's all going well I may throw in a smile or two.

I think that's why I have chosen this widescreen banner of the countryside - you and me standing shoulder to shoulder taking on the world. It's my photo by the way, taken with an android phone :)

The priority for me is to make sure:

the student will learn effectively in as short a time as possible yet leave nothing out

nothing gets in the way in the learning process

whatever I say is concise, clear and has a single meaning without any bias, hidden agenda or a double entendre

To aid with the planning for myself and anyone else who is interested, let me share some back room data ...

Every day around 1,500 people show up, watch 1.4 videos and leave. Thanks to youtube analytics and the new studio.youtube.com I can track pretty much everything.

I am located in England. I make a video, upload them to my YouTube account and have also been accepted on the YPP YouTube Partner Program.

In what seems a few short minutes, my video is available all over the world - that's pretty incredible is it not?

My videos are watched in most if not all countries. From my channel watch time in the last 28 days, we have this data:

USA 29% (of that Computer 57%, Mobile Phone 34%, Tablet 7%)

India 17% (of that Mobile Phone 71%, Computer 26%, Tablet 1%)

UK 7% (of that Computer 56%, Mobile Phone 29%, Tablet 12%)

My videos are watched worldwide on these devices:

Computer 52% (low 26 - high 57%)

Mobile Phone 41% (low 29 - 71%)

Tablet 5%

TV 1%

What you will notice is the extreme difference from the West to the East. Look how Mobile watch time in UK/USA is 29/34% compared to 71% in India. And how I can make a mobile portrait video and get complaints from those in the UK/USA, yet none from those in India/Pakistan.

For gender, my channel has a Male 83%, Female 17% - my aim a balanced fifty fifty.

I see the audience to my channel as intelligent people who have come along to learn something or solve a problem they are having.

That is definitely reflected in the comments - usually specific questions from a video they have watched or a simple, yet heartfelt thanks.

This is a new series on video making education. We take a recent video and talk about how it's made. We look for clues that made it effective and watchable. We then take these lessons and use them to make better videos ourselves.

Episode 1 - The Royal Visit (this post)
Episode 2 - Ancient Maya
Episode 3 - Nat and Friends Will Computers

In this example, it's the recent Royal visit to Australia and Vanuatu uploaded by the The Royal Family UK. To get the best out of this lesson, watch this video, it's 3 mins long and form the basis for the in depth video lesson deconstruct.

I have used the term 'video deconstruct' privately for years as that's what I call it when i watch a film or video and figure how it was made.

And as this video is 19 mins, i fully expect people to watch it at x1.25 or x1.5 speed -- i watch many videos at this speed. I also have tried to speak clearly as a i can as this will allow a very decent auto captions, subtitles, transcript at youtube. That helps me auto-write a text blog post.

In the next episode, we look at the National Geographic's Ancient Maya 101 also at
https://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/101-videos/ancient-maya-101

The audio has transcript has 3,429 words, therefore in 19 mins = 180 words per minute. I make this observation, as typing a blog post like this takes time. Making a video and speaking clearly is another way of getting quite accurate written text.

In the previous post, YouTube and Me - One in a Billion, there were 6,245 spoken words at 37:30 mins = 167wpm meaning I was speaking faster this time.
YouTube and Me - One in a Billion
---
37:30
Transcript

in this talk we're going to learn about
a person's journey through YouTube it's
called YouTube and me one-in-a-billion
you'll see that it's recorded 2nd of May
so what you're going to expect from me
Mike downs is a set of slides I've been
working on in the last month never
really know enquire ously whether
they're going to go to the public eye
but here we are and this is youtube and
this is the public so when we're talking
about this word of me what I really mean
and I'm defining this quite honestly for
myself and that is the beauty of me is
you or me the one person or account the
user on their journey through YouTube to
use that platform as a creator and a
viewer you can also see at the bottom
the document was started on the 31st of
March I'm trying to be accurate of
what's on screen and not throw anything
else in because this talk is about
people time and the future I personally
started looking at the top part here on
YouTube about 8 years ago now if a
person was or is 13 now they're only 5
and if you look at this typical
demographic of a YouTube viewer you'll
see that the 13 to 17 is quite small but
in eight years time these people could
be 21 and moving through the system and
YouTube is a thing which has such an
incredible amount of I don't know
hearsay hype opinions in it so I've
tried to be very and I think it's this
is the next slide and we just see
something yeah I've tried to be very
sober rational and scientific in this
approach so if you look and this is a
quick summary for everyone's benefit to
make sense and that is at the end of
last year you had this Logan pool thing
going on you had huge changes with this
four key for k1k thing in January and
I'm not going to look at all of the
parts of the slide because you can go
and look at them again but you can see
that after these priorities and the
preventing harm thing with YouTube
we've got Robert Kinsel here am chief of
business at YouTube being wheeled out to
do a few talks and in the timeline that
we're talking I take a deep sigh there
is because of course the YouTube San
Bruno saw a violent attack on it which
was just at the start of April Robert
Kim saw here was did as a couple of
things after that in the sort of mid to
late April there's another update in an
April and here and I'm going to say that
we're today more or less on the 2nd of
May so what I'm trying to get at in this
slide is that if you look at where we
are right now at the start of May
there's already huge things coming out
not included in this talk but I'll say
out loud is Susan CIO has just said that
there's 1.8 billion
YouTube users and so what you're about
to see in this talk if I can keep it
very level about the facts that I've
found out and how I wish to be
challenged on them you might find that
some of them are really interesting you
might want to know more about them or
Quanah so you might be a person who goes
oh what i knew that but the thing is is
we're going to find out keeping it
moving along is that with YouTube in the
center here it can be a place where you
really want to put your head in your
hands and say you know as Ron Gogh did
old man in sorrow
you know you get fed up with it equally
if you go on that journey and you're
happy you got Emily here from metric
who's putting her arms up and saying yes
you know I've achieved it so this is a
slide that you're going to keep seeing
in this talk and the reason you are is
because there are some questions that
are being raised one of the the first
one of the three questions I'm raising
is talking about monetization and
advertising revenue this is still an
introduction part the talk by the way so
in other words if we're saying what and
this might be meeting list at the moment
but I will expand and show on screen my
rationale what view ranking would you be
if you just been accepted as a YouTube
partner program meeting the monetization
benchmark of 4,000 watch minutes and
1000 subscribers what view ranking would
you be if you were trying to make a
living on a UK minimum wage or what view
ranking would you be if you were a
full-time paid YouTube creator on a UK
average wave wage the thing is that you
look at this and you rightly say I don't
know what what are you talking about and
that's why
quite honestly I built a load of slides
into it so at the end of this talk
you're going to appreciate
there are 1.5 billion YouTube account
holders now at the moment news just in
news flash
that's gone up to 1.8 billion that's
fine but you know we'll talk about
numbers here number 2 it's possible to
rank many of these YouTube users by
subscriber rank and view rank number 3
to monetize your channel you will need
to be view ranked about three and a half
million I will expand and show you where
I got that number next one to earn a UK
minimum wage you could be view ranked
about fifty thousand on the planet on ad
revenue alone again I will expand it in
a moment next one to earn a UK average
wage you may be view ranked about 20,000
by ad revenue alone please challenge me
on these numbers I will expand them in a
moment
if you have one view you know in other
words you upload a video and you get a
view you could be ranked view ranked at
about twenty two point three millionth
in the world therefore you're in the top
1.5 percent by views I accept that you
don't know what I'm talking about and
this is meaningless as a slice let's
move on one slide here one idea that I
want to be challenged on or we can
challenge each other is if you make
which I've just said one video then you
are already in the top 3% of the YouTube
worldwide platform as about 97% of the
1.5 billion have not uploaded even one
public video
that is something to think on and that's
why it is static on the screen here
without any fancy graphics let's have a
look getting to be more ambiguous should
we say which you have you know kind of
just like expanding on the same idea if
a channel has one view is ranked well
I'm going to skip the acts of course or
said that have an eye does this mean
that 98.5 percent of the YouTube users
worldwide who are logged in have never
uploaded or made a video public at
YouTube this is a big deal because if
you're talking about a platform which
I'm about to expand on so that was an
introduction again step back think
YouTube is a platform that sits on
planet earth in the words of Duran Duran
you're looking at planet Earth I'm not
even going to do the bop bop forgetting
YouTube for a moment but focusing very
closely on the world population it's
about more or less about seven point six
billion you can see at the bottom here
that I've got some updated things the
Internet users on this planet are about
3.8 billion and I've put the zeroes in
here because you are I sit right over
here on the right hand side is one
person seven point six billion is a big
number compared to you or I or the
people we know world seven point six
Internet users 3.8 billion YouTube users
1.5 billion for the purpose of this talk
what I'm trying to get to here is that
YouTube of course is a big platform if
50 percent of the world population is
connected to the Internet 40 of those
connected are YouTube users trying to
get an idea to figure out what is
happening in the world because we're
drilling down onto things like this
using live internet stats or whatever
it's called there's a reference thing at
the end of the slide show we can see
that by 2016 which could you could argue
two years ago
they're ranked by the internet users
here you can see on screen the one I
want to highlight here without wasting
people's time on slides is that in the
last year alone India have had an
increase of a hundred and eight million
users if you take that Robert Kinsel
talk he said the one in India that a
hundred and thirty five YouTube creators
are now listed with over 1 million subs
I would argue it's more like 250
compared to only 2 last year it shows
that the world white platform is growing
so how can we get down to a level where
we can start making sense and
rationalizing that well we can use a
website called social blade where I've
gone along and I've thought about the
number one channel in the whole world
and also how that relates all the way
down to the channel or the group of
channels that are about 1.5 billion
ranking using video views not
subscribers is something I'm looking at
what you see on the top right of the
screen is my own public social blade
screen user screen if you like at this
time of made 108 yeah 865 videos I've
got nearly a million views I am ranked
at one point six million in the world in
actual fact when I had a relook at this
slide I've just increased nearly twenty
thousand what you'll notice is that
really I can skip the slide because this
is a more close-up slide of the one that
I've just had what we can do is start to
think about your own channel at the
bottom it says go to social blade and
visit your own channel and see your own
view rank because views are the things
that you might get paid on views in my
mind are far far more important than
subscribers that's my opinion
sweet sorrow is this thing an oxymoron
by Shakespeare saying that the sweetness
is to say Wow Wow well I am 1.6 million
thin the world is that a good thing or
is that a bad thing well you might say
1.6 million to have 1.6 million above me
that's terrible but if you think that
there are one point four nine eight
billion people below me in terms of
views then I'm really near the top I
mean that is a it's quite difficult
numbers the numbers are so so big
let's keep moving and let's say that
with me personally I'm looking at a new
project or 500 feet pictures but I have
a really really huge dilemma because
what I do about making this public on a
youtube channel because quite honestly
the bar means that here is my new
channel on screen it's called 500 feet
pictures I have made a channel at the
moment it's got two subscribers probably
me and a friend it's got zero watch
hours zero views because there's zero
videos but to reach this benchmark I
need a thousand subscribers 4000 watch
outs are more or less in my calculation
about two hundred thousand views before
I can even be considered on the YouTube
Partner Program so what do I do
on the right hand side you see my
existing channel already has nearly two
thousand subscribers not a lot but it
nearly has 1 million views which is a
million views more than this channel as
a dilemma here and this is why I'm
making this talk to try and highlight it
to other people if we're going to look
at some visualization
then if a channel has one view and it is
VAT ranked at 22 millionth it's in the
top 1.5 how can we make sense of it how
can we visualize it please at the bottom
it says check my maths check my
reasoning is this data fair and
reasonable based on something like
social blade if we trust social blade
I started to think about this because in
terms of my training I am a teacher you
know small children so what I would do
is I would go away and I could say right
you've got these huge huge numbers how
can you make sense of them if we said
and I need to look at the scale here I
wanted to build a simple scale model to
represent one a million and a billion
users something that people could
understand I chose a person who is 1.5
meters high if you think and I've also
put the tape measure at the side here
this is a visualization that the 1.5
meters equals the 1.5 billion users 1
centimeter which you know is probably
the width of your thumb or your one of
your fingers represents in this model 10
million users a millimeter which is what
the the depth or the thinness or the
thickness of your actual fingernail is 1
million users but what you see that if
we're going back to this 20 2.3 million
is that the width of these two sharpies
actually means that this 22 millimeters
represents the 20 2.3 million users at
YouTube who have actually made a video
or got more than one view what I'm
trying to get out here is that the pink
line at the bottom is the whole of
YouTube but you're talking about a very
very skinny thin distance for the people
or the percentage of the people 1.5 who
have actually made videos in the first
place so you could conclude conclude
that all of these people down here are
watches or people who use the platform
purely to watch something I wanted to
visualize it again to say look using a
scale that if one millimeter was a user
over the whole of the world horizontally
then one millimeter per user would equal
50
thousand kilometers which is the 1.5
billion you can look at this and you can
say okay you know what does this mean is
it useful to me it might be useful to
some people watching this slide it might
not be but you can see all the people
who make videos are actually in this dot
thing here into the length of that I
wanted to keep going keep looking at the
different angles of this literally
because the world isn't flat its round
and if you use that same scale to
visualize some big big numbers with one
millimeter you can actually stretch that
to 15,000 kilometers over the world from
top to bottom or left to right but the
important thing is that the YouTube
users who actually make videos is
represented in this tiny tiny tiny
little yellow band which is absolutely
nothing compared to the size of the
total users again if it works for you
great if it doesn't it doesn't I will do
another slide remember I'm focusing part
of this talk on young YouTube users
coming through who wish to think about
the platform in general and get some
education on it so if I said in this
scale model that one millimeter equals
or / user / 21.1 km/h Heathrow Airport
get on a bike and literally cycle for 90
minutes across London and you'll see all
of them but remember as your wheel turns
each user is only a millimeter thick
just trying to get an idea of how many
people there are in the YouTube platform
okay look we have got to a level where
we're just taking a step back if you're
still you know with some of this and
looking at my rationale my slides or my
ideas we need to say look YouTube has
got a huge huge user base what other
groups are out there that we could case
study about wishing to think about
anything to do with numbers and big
groups well
if you wanted to take something quite
popular in the world if you like the 265
million people play football if you
think that this data was in July 2007
you've got 265 million people who have
an interest or play football in 2018 the
World Cup is coming to Russia there are
32 teams of 23 players that means about
736 players which means doing the math
of 2.6 5 billion who play football for
fun that represents a very very small
number as one in every 360,000 people
who play football might end up in the
World Cup the reason I'm making the
slide is to say if you start doing
something you like what is your
expectation of getting very good or at a
very high level of it a visualization
here in terms of education away I would
say imagine this this is Wembley Stadium
it's in London there are 90,000 people
in the crowd or in that stadium right
now but there's only 22 of them who will
eventually be kicking the football
around as players on that pitch that
represents point zero two percent of the
amount of people in that stadium the
reason I'm making it is this if we go on
and we say that we want to have a go at
YouTube how could we compare that to
something else and the reason I've used
this is weekly leisure time if you went
out to play this football three hours
say on a Tuesday night you had a bit of
practice you wanted to top that up with
some gym work that's three that's six
hours of your time and then you played
the football match in the traveling or
messing around so on the Saturday you've
just spent 10 hours of your time doing a
leisure activity how much time could be
spent on YouTube as a creator every
single week 10 hours in many ways is
just to give away I think quite honestly
people are watching TV that's sky rhotic
and you know watching screens and stuff
for leisure is about what 25 hours a
week I don't know that's a guess you
know from
the research that I did what I'm trying
to get to is the travel that we have
through this platform in terms of single
single people what you'll find here is
we've got a chap here young ladies a
teenager and here's a busker and he is
starting to do something that he's
passionate about you'll notice that he's
got ginger hair he's got a guitar and
he's got his guitar box open and he's
hoping for a little bit of money in
there this chap here carried on and
carried on once a few years back he got
in your you know clue eros that cause
it's on screen that Ed Sheeran Eirias
look in a some Pancras railway station
before he was famous on YouTube as well
playing his guitar and then eventually
he ends up in Wembley Stadium on his
solo concert playing so what I'm trying
to get to is that anyone can do this but
not everyone can do it
because they need a bit of luck or they
need a bit of talent or they need to be
seen but what I'm saying is that for
that one person who wants to try then
there are examples out there not a lot
but there are examples we can take
another one here with Jessie J she here
she is look in her bedroom in 2009
playing a song that's at the moment had
about 9.2 million
nothing big deal about it she sat there
obviously a gazillion times talented
more than me and she's having a song and
a sing and youtube mama knows best
the reason I've used it is because she's
also I don't think it's her solo concept
she's in there and she does extremely
well and she's in front of 80,000 people
then weirdly but brilliantly is she only
in the last couple of weeks she drops
off the radar but appears again in China
start singing and wins their equivalent
of x-factor what I'm trying to say here
is how YouTube can be a platform for you
or I or anybody else who wants to try
something we've got to understand the
individual journeys before we start
understanding how we feel about those
whether we are hands in the air we have
done it or we are trying abyssal
our heart out but we're upset or we're a
bit down with it and we've got our head
in her hands you know I'm not gonna lie
I've been going for like you know many
many years now and you know I'd love to
have had a gazillion bits more views and
success than I had but it's not about me
it's about the story that I'm telling so
if you want to do your work and this is
the bar where we get back on it so it's
coffee break over if you like how do we
know anything about the YouTube users
without this website and this is the
best one I've come across socialblade we
really wouldn't know we really really
wouldn't know not a lot we'd be guessing
a lot and that is that if you look at
social blade you can search for any user
you can have a look at the top 50 100
500 YouTube channels bottom left down
here and after watch the mouse pointer
thing is that on the bottom left there
is a YouTube money calculator and we can
start to do some work and that work is a
little bit weird really because you're
talking about guesses and I want to iron
out those guesses this is another
example of hell with my channel you can
see that I'm 1.6 million you know I've
looked at your own channel already said
that this one I've highlighted just one
tiny thing you can look at similar
channels to yourself you can sort them
by subscribers or you can sort them by
video views if you look at mine in the
right hand column sorry the left hand
column by subscribers they are all about
1925 or so but you can see that the
views vary hugely similarly on the right
we've got 949 thousand views but on the
left the subscribers go up and down
there's somebody here with the same
amount of views similar to me but
they've only got 123 subscribers there's
someone down here with three thousand
subscribers what I'm trying to get at is
a picture a broad picture of how data
starts to work so if we used a brief
method of using your own personal
YouTube analytics your own sorry public
example of social blade maybe
the top 500 youtubers we could use the
YouTube money calculator and then use
simple math and logic we could start
ranking these 1.5 billion users from 1
all the way down to 1.5 billion more or
less and draw some conclusions so the
easy part is going to social blade and
if we at the top here sort by video
views we very clearly get who is at the
number one spot all the way down to who
is at the number 500th spot that is very
very easy but as I said we're not
dealing with 500 we are dealing with
millions and billions so I went away and
this is why it's taken a bit of time and
started looking around not with anything
complicated but with straightforward
common-sense and I came up with
something like this in other words we
start off with view ranks with somebody
at the very very top who we know has got
35 billion views and they are view
ranked as number one we can easily go
down and start ranking them up to about
496 500 then going on who I kind of like
know already and what guesses I've made
and what you know looks I've done this
of course is up to about 40 different
cells here 40 different rows view
ranking from number 1 all the way down
to this odd one down here where
somebody's subscribed to my channel not
saying who they are who has got 5 views
I've used social blade and I found they
are ranked as 21 sorry 22 point 1 4 7
millionth somebody down here with 0
views is supposedly ranked at twenty two
point three million twenty two point
eight you get the idea
notice it's not to scale because if I
start off with you rank one and I go
down to view rank twenty two point eight
million then I would need 23 million
rows and I haven't done that look it
says at the bottom check this for
yourself because these are just my
guesses I am Mike downs who has gone to
a computer and had a little look and
that is where I've started this was
slide 5 by the way
where I started to view rank these
things and I've said what is the
accepted benchmark to monetize your
channel in terms of view ranking
let's quite honestly you know make a
hand-written
payoff to what I've got so far please
please please check this for yourself
top right these notes are made using a
CPM cost per mile from my own channel
then calculating similar calculations
for others and I'm literally got my
hands in the air my hands raised to you
saying there are huge huge errors but if
I am 10 or 20 percent out we are talking
millions or thousands they'll not the
hair's width so is this a decent rule of
thumb number one you've got the top top
channel in the world but from my
calculations I have calculated that if
you are ranked view ranked at about
20,000 in the world you may be earning a
UK average wave wave there excuse me a
UK average wage that is about 27,000 UK
work it out for American or whatever
your your numbers are I wanted to get a
feeling if you are making a UK minimum
wage at these numbers you are more or
less ranked at about 50,000 in the world
to get monetized I would say again big
big general rule of thumb you could be
considered to be view ranked at about
3.5 million to be monetized based on
about 550 views a day more or less about
200,000 a year this all vary hugely
creator to create a depending on your
content your advertising your place
located in the world many many factors
but I'm trying to look at a decent rule
of thumb once again this could make you
feel wonderful because you're earning
say full-time or average wages or it
might make you feel terrible because
quite honestly you're not even man
attire
and you think you never ever can be that
is why I wanted to get some of this
thinking out into the open and have a
discussion about it or to see because
those people who are considering this
right now could be 13 years of age and
if they're going to put a couple of
years into it I would write out rightly
sort of give some advice to say you know
do your due diligence and find these
things out an observation on this slide
many top youtubers have a higher sub
rank subscriber rank than view rank what
that actually means in my way in a
general way is that people sub maybe to
say it's very cool or very useful to
them
but they don't actually watch that
channel if you like you can look down on
this these two nameless examples and say
that this person here has got three
point five millionth view rank but
they've got a subscriber rank
substantially higher than 3.5 million in
other words six hundred and fifty four
thousand this very popular creator here
is four hundred and ninety six view rank
but their subscriber Inc is two three
four so in a statistical world and
that's why this little seesaw is on the
left hand side is to say that for every
example I can give you where the view
rank is lower than the sub rank the
opposite must be true because in a
balance statistic what everything irons
out so I could show you a ton if I find
them of subscribers that are really
really really high sorry I forgot a low
number yes so let's say the subscriber
rank was either ten millionth but their
view rank was incredibly high so keep
this moving along to popular YouTube
creators this is a pure observation I'm
sure they won't mind it's public
information which one is to frank home
which one is Casey the answer here you
can clearly see on the side here is Phil
and Casey meaning that Phil DeFranco
site has a subscriber rank of 444 and a
view rank of 447 that's extremely
balanced where if you look at the Casey
channel they have got a well he's got a
502 view rank but he's subscriber rank
is half that at two to five
again maybe he bangs out you know this
idea of getting nine million subscribers
or more and 2.1 billion maybe this one
up here's got 2.2 billion views but less
subscribers of course six million is six
million more than me my point is look at
the data and to be into a position where
if you wish to get paid then is the
YouTube Partner something for you as
they I'm not a Google employee I'm not a
YouTube employee I'm just a guy I'm a
former teacher who happens to have a
YouTube channel so hey this might be one
person's opinions but I wanted to be
remember very sober and very rational
because if we are talking about dollars
being sent to your bank account then
this is a very very tentative reckoning
and I do not like talking about money in
public or even generally because I'm an
educator I deal in pure pure information
this is very much an applied example the
slide you're looking at covers over the
name and the details of this creator but
what I can say in this example is that
using the general social blade user
profile we can see that there is 1500 to
23,000 UK pounds a year we must use a
second example and to put that user
number or name into the YouTube social
blade money calculator addresses on the
bottom of the screen figure out how many
daily views use a CPM to come up with an
idea my summary here is this particular
nameless channel is doing income revenue
of about eighteen thousand dollars
thirteen thousand UK pounds please bear
in mind the little graphic on the Left
where we've got a person who's a new
creator if this person was the sole
person who owned and run filmed and
uploaded and everything to this channel
they in theory would keep the revenue
but if this person was a co-creator with
one or two people maybe a head a camera
operator may be a business operator
maybe you know an editor
they must split that revenue so if you
want to make parts on money or full-time
money you've really got to think of how
your business model works and of course
for advertisers
is very troublesome with that said when
I say troublesome I mean it can go up
and down and all sorts of different
things with with views we're nearly at
the end here so look the creator blog
comes up with certain things and once
again that's why I've said check for
yourself
and this is the thing that before I get
into the the details and I know your
eyes are reading already even if this is
true what do you care about these
incredible people who are earning like
half a million dollars or million
dollars a year because you know if it's
not you or me then why should we care
and that the only conclusion I can say
is that forewarned is forearmed meaning
that if YouTube creator blog comes out
with a statement that says over the last
year channels earning 5 figures annually
grew more than 35 percent while channels
earning six figures annually grew more
than 40 percent while we're proud of
this progress I know we have more work
to do that's all well and good because I
do trust that if you know big people are
making ton of money then it will filter
down and the smaller people will get
some eventually but in my rationale if
you look at the statement of what six
figures are then that must be by
mathematical definition from a hundred
thousand to 999 they grew 40% doing a
lot of work I believe that there are or
or view ranks for those people who are
doing this sort of money there are about
a thousand to ten thousand people in the
world doing this at the moment of our
view rank if the people are earning
between $10,000 and should we say nine
to say a hundred thousand dollars I
reckon the view rank that you're looking
out between about ten thousand to two
hundred thousand so I'm trying to get a
feeling of in this 1.5 billion people
what are the numbers talking about
because this number down here where we
say therefore earning over five hundred
thousand dollars or over a million
dollars I reckon through my estimations
am I looking my calculations there are
about seven hundred people in the world
earning more than five hundred thousand
three hundred people or accounts earning
more than a million on ad revenue alone
this is hugely
hugely off please please please top
center check this for yourself feedback
to me leave a comment because it's a big
deal with a big platform but if you look
at it and you think where am i where can
I measure myself with the world well if
you've never started then you might have
in your head in your hands already if
you are delusions you might be shouting
in the air but you might be lucky there
are people who have done a million
subscribers or a million views within
record time but there are other people
who haven't and if you're on your own
you know sat at home or sat wherever you
are do know what you're doing think
about being level I don't want to
discourage and I don't want to inspire I
just want to be level and I want to be
neutral that was it folks this is a talk
given to me with a lot of references
there are some of the references here if
you want something this talking already
then by all means leave a comment get
hold of me
this was youtuber me one-in-a-billion by
YouTube Mike downs recorded more or less
on the 2nd of May 2018 and oh yes let's
go back to look at what you've just seen
because I'm finishing this up number two
that do that's what you've seen so far
you've been here hopefully and learnt
something about this in a very general
way about the journey of one person
through YouTube my next series on this
will be YouTube and maybe it won't be
one in a billion it will be simply
called the video which will look at the
ways videos are made the types of video
we've got and quite honestly when we
look at all of those things considered
in YouTube it's about sharing videos and
about people and I will call it and I've
got this written down here that I think
YouTube is a human and machine
popularity platform but I hope it's more
than that and I hope that I can continue
to make videos that will help people
learn thank you very much ..
This opens up an opportunity to test out and demo a Decathlon Store Bike Lock Display Image with a Crowdsourced set of annotations (visit the demo image at google drive).

The image in drive is also embedded below..

Anyone can add a comment and start a discussion based on an area of the image you see in the post.

On looking at the decathlon website for bike locks, we see all the products with photos, specs, maybe a review and the latest price.

The purpose of this idea is to see if something useful can be made that does cannot be immediately found in the official help video or at the website.

The file I have created could be valuable for Decathlon Customers, Staff and even Google themselves to refine adding comments to images in Drive.
Decathlon UK - Advice: How to choose your bike lock, English Transcript

Peter, Cycling Enthusiast to camera, ‘Today I’m going to help you choose a bike lock. There are three elements to consider when thinking about buying a bike lock

The level of security that you require

The number of bikes which you will be storing and

The type of lock you want to buy

There are four main types of bike locks available

a cable lock

a D lock

a chain lock and

a folder lock

Generally, bike locks are broken into two main categories

Ones which give security and safety for accessories or small parts, for helmets and the second category

Strong bike locks to secure the bike to an immovable object to prevent theft

For the main lock of your bike we would always recommend a strong lock such as a D lock or a chain lock - this really does help secure your bike very well.

And finally, the environment in which you are securing your bike really plays it’s part, so always try to make sure you secure your bike in a well lit area where it can really help deter thieves from taking your bike.

Locks tend to come with a security rating with a number found in the packaging generally ranging from 0 to 10, 10 being the strongest, 0 being the weakest. Of course, zero risk is not possible. So always make sure you can use a main D lock or chain lock to secure your bike and a secondary cable lock to slow down thieves.

where two screen become one on android 7.0 onwards

If you’ve a curious mind, then you often cannot stop thinking about things - in this case how an Android Screen can be Split into two halves to display two apps at the same time, side by side.

So what’s the best use of this feature and what makes the perfect match?

I’ve done some thinking on the topic, as googling for what other people have written has turned up precious little.

In other words, no more than a few ‘How to..’ posts from tech news websites (around Feb to Oct 2016).

Google Android themselves produce a few lines too at the help page, nothing more than a ‘hold the square, choose an app, see two at the same time’.

Part One in the video looks at how having 70 Apps (in my case), will produce some Birthday Paradox math that means (70x69)/2= 2,415 possible combinations.

screens from mike downes own moto g4

Where your most used 10 Apps will produce (10x9)/2= 45 combinations.

From the people I know, not one has said, ‘Yes wow, that android split screen thing is something I use all the time’.. In fact a few have said, ‘No idea what it is..’

In Part Two in the videos I look at the question I googled, ‘how many times do you need to do something before it becomes a habit’ and the incredible answer of:

"On average, it takes more than 2 months before a new behavior becomes automatic — 66 days to be exact. And how long it takes a new habit to form can vary widely depending on the behavior, the person, and the circumstances. In Lally's study, it took anywhere from 18 days to 254 days for people to form a new habit" (jamesclear).

Which means even if you (or me) learned Split Screen and started to use it - it may take a whopping 66 days before the behaviour in us was automatic.

On a lighter note, what are the most well known combinations in life? As Forrest Gump always said, ‘Me and Jenny goes together like peas and carrots.’

I also consider where we have come from before computers. Like watching a TV, then having that addictive second screen (to follow a hashtag on twitter).

And also the time when we had just books and a pen and some paper.

collage of split screen examples

One theme is the simple act of reading in one place, thinking then writing in another.

Everyone has a mobile that is SO PERSONAL to them.

For me, Split Screen is getting to me more autonomous. I am privileged in that my Moto G4 has a 5.5 inch screen - that’s pretty big as mobiles go.

I’m still working on the chart of How Useful? versus How Much Time?

In Part Two, I talk about how Maps/Dialler is very useful yet short lived, less than a minute maybe (where it’s see a phone number, open Split Screen with phone dialler and make the call).

useful against time

A Most Useful and Long Time use maybe YouTube Live Video and Twitter - where you are watching an event then following the hashtag and tweeting.

This is a mini version of the old school BIG TV and 2nd Screen tablet/laptop.

I make video lessons to help people learn - in this case, I helped myself learn about Android Split Screen and then shared it publicly.

Seven or eight years ago, there was a buzz and beta and all this openness and transparency. Change happens and I’m not convinced we are all that PUBLIC beta and open anymore.

Maybe the planet has SO MANY on the web now, it’s just so hard to find what you need. Or how we never seem to get past page 2 of google on anything we search for. I digress..

Bottom line for now - How I need to ruminate on Android Split Screen for a while, let it fade a bit and usually I have more to give.

Doing simple math, 66 Days from now is 24 March 18 - I will diary note that and ask myself the same question again, ‘What is the perfect combination for using Android Split Screen?’

The Playlist has a 60 sec trailer then parts One and Two ..

mixing voice and music with audacity

If you watch or make videos where someone is talking and there is music playing in the background, then read on.

I make video lessons to help people learn, mostly with me just talking, and mostly like never to I add music too.

That said, I do get irritated with my own pauses where I breath or make other noises, we all do. So what if some music was added to break that silence? Something nicely blended not too much high, not too low - just right.

I searched for some magic formula, quickly saw there wasn't one, then settled on a few ideas
Voice only
Audio Ducking - music rises up and then down as voice speaks and pauses
A Voice and Music with set volume (maybe at 15-20%)

Here's a two part video set on what I found out using mobile and desktop, with a variety of software like: PowerDirector, Audacity, Vegas Movie Studio

Many thanks to the wistia article, 'Video Background Music: Getting the Volume Perfect' where I offer this quote:

"I watch a ton of videos that use ducking, where the music level comes down when someone is talking on screen, then instantly rises when they finish. This technique ensures that the music is not overpowering the voices on screen, but it fails by constantly calling attention to the music.'

"Personally, I keep the music at a consistent volume throughout the video. For this technique to work, you really have to find the right piece of music. Unless the video is highly specialized, I look for music that's simple and free from distracting elements (for example, group "whoa"-ing). In this case, I mix the music volume as high as I can get away with while making sure it doesn't overpower the narrative.

Mini Conclusion - For me ducking looks like too much work, where carefully chosen music at a consistent volume will work if music is set at around 15-20% compared to 100% voice. But, choose music carefully as the wrong track will get annoying fast.

There is a lot of meme behaviour here too, as one chap commented on my video, 'the person that convinced youtubers to always add background music to their videos should be 'spoken to'.. if I wanted music I would play music on a separate app'.

Which is a great point, maybe we were bred into this from MTV etc with all these adrenaline fuelled action videos where everyone seemed to have a heavy metal guitar over the top. Quite alien to me as a former school teacher - I mean how many teachers stand there in class with a backing track..
G Suite New Ideas New Ways to use Apps on Mobile and Desktop

This is a collection of ideas I have found using Gogle Docs, Slides, Drawings.

Techniques that can be used in these G Suite Apps whether on Desktop or Mobile - usually where new things crop up that were only available in other desktop software.

Examples like: making a simple collage, adding a border to a photo, drop shadows and reflections etc..

And also the subtle differences between working on the same doc on desktop or mobile. There is a new playlist below.

As those who follow me will know, I screen recorder my mobile and desktop to make video lessons. G Suite Apps presented on the android split screen provide a new way to get a serious message out in a fast way - something would take many hours to video edit.

When Android Nougat 7.0 introduced Split Screen (around mid 2016) there were many hit and fade news articles - but very little case study examples. It worries me how we live in a BIG NEWS OMG WOW one hour and all is forgotten the day after.

using Camera and Keep notes on split screen

edit, One example of a decent split screen case study is Android N Split Screen Feature where the guy talks through maps, camera, photos, keep, twitter, youtube etc. I particularly like the CAMERA - KEEP use where he film a video AND read his script, just like a teleprompter ..

I have 841 public videos at my youtube channel - there are many more on G Suite Drive Docs, these two have been popular..
However, I have found a brilliant drone font and it's free. Thought it maybe useful for the odd bullet point or illustration on a poster or collage.

I am a novice when it comes to character fonts, one easy way - just type a line on your keyboard like '¬!"£$%^&*()_+' and then do the same swapping to the drone front, '<span style="font-family: "drone"; font-size: 16pt;">¬!”£$%^&*()_+

<span style="font-family: "drone"; font-size: 16.0pt; line-height: 115%;">

' Then just copy and paste what you like the look of.

Therefore * = <span style="font-family: "drone"; font-size: 21.3333px;">* For more:
<span style="font-family: "drone"; font-size: 21.3333px;"> `1234567890-=

<span style="font-family: "drone"; font-size: 16.0pt; line-height: 115%;">`1234567890-=

From my short test on win10, I can open the drone font and copy/paste in MS Word, Picasa, Photoshop and Blogger (that I am using here). Google Docs, Twitter, Facebook does NOT work (as I said I am a coding skill set novice).

I know there are Apps that make Emoji - just not tried them so far.

Audacity 2.2.1 on Win10

It’s easy, real easy to record decent audio - I use my Moto G4 phone, a few JVC HA EBR25 / EBR80 Sports headset plugged into the phone or my Win10 laptop. I also have a Zoom H1 pro Mic.

Sports Headset with Mic will plug into Phone and Laptop to Record

Yet all of this makes me so lazy as it’s simple to record my voice and be understood.

Does this mean software like Audacity is used even less, I think not.

In my opinion, it opens up a cavern of opportunity for everyone to record audio, edit it effectively an publish something that polished and listenable, whether as audio only or as a track on a produced video.

I would encourage anyone who has not edited audio before to give it a go. You can do pretty much anything like take out all the mistakes, delete stuff and change the order for a greater sense of purpose and understanding.

Audio editing like video editing allows you the magic of playing with time - to speed it up and slow it down and change the order. Just like that 90 minute football game edited into a few minutes of highlights.

On November 2017, the team at Audacity released a whole new look where I made a thirteen help videos so far, see the playlist below. As I said in the video notes:

This a series of help videos for learning how to use Audacity and to have as much fun as possible. Video will assume little or no knowledge and are designed to make Audacity appeal to a whole new generation of users.

For me personally, I’m a novice audio editor, yet seem to have used Audacity for the last eight years, so I cannot be that bad. I tend to make help videos that are short, to the point and solve a problem or a user’s question.

My favourite for versions 2.2.0 and 2.2.1 is the new Color Themes and the Waveform Colorways. As audio is not that visual, it’s vital to look at Audacity in a form that you find attractive - get that right and it boosts confidence.

I have a second playlist too, 12 videos including the popular, How to Clean Audio using Audacity: Noise Removal, Normalise and Compressor (31 May 13).

I still have it on my list to look at the official Audacity Manual Help Pages and make a few videos following the many many topic areas.

I’ve used BeFunky on and off since 2009 I think, always on desktop, from memory maybe it was a downloaded application.

Yet here I am in 2018 talking BeFunky again, which seems to have found it’s way to me partly from memory as that’s what I search for after looking at the Storyboard comic strip images.

And partly on a quest to find out what Apps are out there to add photo effects to straight photos.

Google Photos will add one tap filters like Auto and twelve more where Snapseed offers effects then another ten or so too filters, however they do not extend to the graphic art look.

Enter the BeFunky Android App (also available on iOS) where I’ve made the six video playlist below.

The important part here, we are talking and using MOBILE not DESKTOP. From a few emails to and from BeFunky Support, it seems they work very hard on the Desktop BeFunky service, where the mobile app is an extension to desktop offering fewer tools.

All well and good, yet for people on the go, they will never get to desktop at all if they are out and about.

Take a look at the lead slide of the Hare in the field on the horizon. It was taken Sept 2014 with a Nikon D80 at 300mm.

Back then all desktop with a Pop Art effect. If I repeated that today, I could do it all in that field using a USB OTG cable to my mobile loading the image from SD Card and have that quartered pop art in a few mins.

Summing up, BeFunky is an example of how anyone can use a mobile phone to it’s full potential.
I have no real interest, and certainly no energy for people who chase and drop Apps. As an educator, I’m looking at what Apps will be used time and time again and those in which we cannot live without.

In my personal toolbox, I’m looking for an app that changes a photo into something that proves a point or helps tell a story, teach a lesson fast and immediately.
It also gets me thinking about how people are not comfortable with reality, they may prefer a little exaggeration or a literal blurring of it.

sgt harry tangye car then befunky

Take a look at this photo of a UK Police Car as tweeted by Sgt Harry Tangye. It’s already a strong image with lovely symmetry, yet in my view, you can see too much with so much crisp detail.
It took me a few mins to think about how that image could be used to say something else. In this case advertise the officer’s twitter handle overlaid onto a blur and a frame.

I heard about and downloaded U Scanner by Cyberlink on Android on 14 Dec 17 (iOS is also available).

After a five minute test, I upgraded to Premium and paid £1.23 UK (no watermarks and no ads). For that price it would hardly break the bank.

I've made three videos on the playlist below and also include the official video.

There is some real magic involved here - and it will catch a lot of people out. U Scanner (and similar apps) let you import ANY photo into the app - which opens up a case of ethics - Is it fair to use U Scanner to process and deskew and save image that is not yours?

In these examples, I believe it is. The UK Police posted some photos on twitter for the positive use of technology. Both have a small hidden image - see the lead slide which has a mobile phone with 25 Apps on screen. They are hard to read, so use U Scanner and save.

In this example of a Police Drone supporting Fire and Rescue, there is incredible detail - you can now read the most of the fine details on screen. Of course the responsibility, in my opinion, is on understanding your 'camera's resolution' knowing how the photo you post in public MAY BE SAVED or VIEWED at it's HIGHEST resolution.

As a classroom teacher, I used an old school whiteboard with dry wipe pens - IF ONLY I had U Scanner back then, could have saved EVERY SINGLE DAY and each lesson. Of course, I moved on to a digital projector, so all lesson notes were saved already. And yes I did use dusty white chalk too.

pain relief tablet box

Autonomy - U Scanner and any other App like it provides a vital tool to your mobile armoury. When the need arises, make sure you are thinking right. In the final example using a pain relief tablet box, a simple photo through U Scanner makes that tiny text more accessible and therefore readable.

Happy New Year People! It's 6 Jan 2018 already and last month on 11 Dec 17, Research at Google published a new android app to Transform your videos into Instant Comics.

I've made a few tests and demos and published a video playlist below. I will add more videos soon, especially as I have a backlog of ideas queued up as the seasonal vacation interrupted the flow.

I have no idea how this App has been used and if it's used at all? How could I unless there was a gallery of comic strips to browse?

Which begs the question in the title - Is it still a thing? It was only launched 26 days ago - yet in the Install, Try and Forget mentality of Apps, how do we see the examples? I'll email feedback and see what they say.

A testcard in style of Six Visual Styles

Next Steps - I've started to look deeper into the six visual styles and how we can predict what happens when we load a video. The lead slide and test card are two examples - on their own quite meaningless, yet for the student, quite important with an eye on design.

My own view, and given the time, it's just scratching the surface of this idea - how we can take a short video and make a captivating comic strip.

I've used Sgt Harry Tangye's Bank Holiday Shift as one example. The slide shows just nine images with five text boxes which gives a fast idea how effective the storyboard can be.

The Fun Element comes with the 'I wonder what it will look like?' An example is the Nat and Friends video Will Computers Ever Hear which is 11:37 long - that's 697 seconds. So if Storyboard created a comic every 5 seconds, that would be 139. Based on an average of 5 images per strip that's 697 images in total.

Yet in practice, you load the video, wait, then pull to refresh as we know. A lot easier.

Looking much wider and we need to, how we can use other Apps and Services like Google Drawings, Picasa, Comic Strip Pro and BeFunky to enhance what we already have made with Storyboard or make new comic strips based on still images.

There are a lot of double positives here, where we may try and test and demo and come up with very little that is new. Or where Storyboard maybe a WONDERFUL App, yet people may pass it by as 'too much work'.

This 'age of instant' we live in is a real worry as those of us who remember taking photos with a film camera will know we have to wait an hour, a day or a week to see any photos at all - not the REALTIME large screens that are on the back of every mobile phone and most DSLRs these days.

I have a backlog of topics and posts so that's it for this one..
Of the seven hundred public videos I have on youtube, the 1st, 2nd and 9th most watched video is about cleaning audio.

For example, watch the most viewed How to clean audio with Audacity: Noise Removal, Normalise and Compressor at this link.

It's with that in mind I've started to listen to everyday sounds and how best to record them. One recent example, standing in a bathroom where the ceiling fan, water faucet, paper towel and plastic bin and made very distinct sound. Listen to this one.

And then we had the walk in the countryside a few days ago where I made four recordings using the Moto G4 with RecForge II Pro, Sounds of the Countryside.

The next step and to satisfy my curiosity was running a set of tests comparing the Moto G4 Mic with the Zoom H1.

What started out as a Zoom H1 compared to Moto G4 - which is better quickly turned into a Could the Moto G4 be used as an adequate, if not brilliant day to day microphone? Where the Zoom H1 set of recordings are made as control audio.

Take a look at the size of the microphones themselves with large XY Stereo set on Zoom H1 and the small pinhole mic on Moto G4. Much is seen as the same on a DSLR Lens with large multi part glass compared to small dot of a camera on a mobile phone.

Any recorded sound must hit those mics and be converted into an electric signal to be recorded. Many mics these days are tiny (as seen on the lapel of TV presenters) and many are not (like the new China Radio telescope with a diameter of 500m, see my video.

Light and sound have a lot in common - they both travel in straight lines and bounce off objects to reach out ears. Of course light will reflect off a surface, but only an image is seen clearly on the calm water of a lake or a mirror or glass. Any sound is made through a series of vibrations, sent through the air, solid or a liquid to be heard.

As a timeline, we have

a sound is made, travels through the air and reaches the microphone

we hope this sound is a pure form (like a voice) and not hindered by distractions (like wind, traffic, other voices etc).

on hitting an intended surface, like a microphone, there and 100s of different types - as illustrated with just two like the Zoom H1 XY and the front pinhole mic of the Moto G4

after mic uptake we have: software, processor and storage (bitrate - wav mp3, kHz etc)

once stored, audio will be played back and heard through speakers, a headset etc

and if not as required, we use some other software like audacity to clean that audio, or to change pitch, tempo or a 100 other settings.

then we listen again, if happy - save

ready to use as required as that single file of as a component in something else like: music, film, podcast etc..

I make these simple observations, not to take you back to Science 101, but to slow us down to think about getting back to basics. In a busy world with a mobile in our pocket, we tend to see that device as it's simplest and most urgent form, often to just make calls and to text.

That's a huge shame - our phone is a multi purpose tool capable of hundreds of different tasks each and every day.

There are six videos on my Make Good Audio Playlist. This post and these videos are all about listening - thinking about sound, best ways to capture, then save it. To do that - turn off your eyes for a moment and listen.

And you need patience and time. Without that you have nothing.

Conclusion of my testing - I would have no hesitation in trusting the Moto G4 Microphone and RecForge II Pro in recording decent audio in an situation. That's not to say I will not use the Zoom H1, rather when I hear and need to record the audio - it's out and about with the Moto G4 in my pocket (with the Zoom H1 somewhere at home). Old adage - the best camera, microphone, paintbrush, pencil etc is the one you have with you ..

For an extension, and one I play all the time - taking photos with a Nikon DSLR versus the Moto G4. Nikon will provide a RAW NEF file that are essential for me. Yet, out on the walk the other day I took 80 photos and only 4 of them were from DSLR. Another day it will be 80 with DSLR and zero from mobile.
.

As a footnote, every video that's uploaded to youtube will have an automated transcript made, providing words can be detected. For my Introduction video, I believe the English Language text to be 100% correct.
This has huge benefits, not only the obvious of being understood and helping people to learn across the globe, but to be found in search in the first place (as transcripts are search indexed). As said at Google IO 2017, 'to reach the next billion users, use simple global english' (slight paraphrase I am sure by me, maybe 'use simple global language' maybe better.
0:03 straightforward test between the zoom h1
0:06 audio versus the Moto G for audio has
0:10 turned out to be really for me a is the
0:15 Moto G for front-facing microphone using
0:18 rec forge pro 2 really adequate in fact
0:22 really quite good for recording all
0:25 purpose audio in your hand in your
0:28 pocket so I'm outdoors
0:30 both of these microphones are on a table
0:32 in front of me and to demonstrate one
0:34 feature is by moving my voice all the
0:38 way over here and so you've got one side
0:40 of the h1 where there's probably no
0:42 difference on the g4 back to the center
0:45 again we can go all the way over this
0:47 side and you've probably got my voice
0:49 from the other side again no difference
0:51 maybe dropping off for the g4 back in
0:54 the middle so that's it just off to
0:58 write the blog post and include
0:59 everything on YouTube and on the blog
1:03 altogether so that was a comparison
1:05 between recording audio g4 moto and the
1:09 zoom h1 along with the ambient sound and
1:13 the birds.
On taking a short walk on a country path through woodland, there are so many choices driven by your senses. What do you photograph or video at the time or write about later?

One option, just relax and see where the moment takes you. While out yesterday, I had nothing in mind, albeit to be 'out' in the first place. That's often the hardest step to take.

All I really wanted, to walk and see things for the first time. The Woodland in August is so different than any other time - that said, I could easily say the same about every month or season of any year.

Without really thinking my mobile came out the pocket being drawn by the Hornbeam Catkins. That was the first of seventy six photos, four audio recordings, three videos and one photosphere.

They had moved the stile, to be more exact - it had disappeared. Styles are quite iconic on a walk, they signal the end of one thing and the beginning of the next. To be fair, I know this path is on a pony route, so fair enough.

Next were the toadstools, four were sat in a row. Nine photos later then two trees.

What caught my attention, the farm machinery in the next field - something I could not see. That's what made me start recording the audio. How the tractor, the farmer's voices were all intermixed with the wind in the trees and the bird song. There were discussions on how best to attach the pickup reel to the tow mechanism.
In the video I made, you will hear four audio sets, this slide will help tell them apart and look at the waveforms. Post edit was made in Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 13.0 on Win10. Audio recorded using Moto G4, then using Audacity to Normalise and Compressor (no noise reduction).

0:00 Audio One - Tractor, Birdsong
1:36 Audio Two - Light Aircraft, Wind in Trees
2:49 Audio Three - Strong Wind in Trees, high level aircraft
3:58 Audio 4 - More high level aircraft, squeak of trees in wind
