The Kenilworth Centre is a recently established charity which will take over the running of Kenilworth Youth & Community Centre on 1st April 2012. They run an evening senior and junior youth club and a Saturday cinema, up to (PG) cert, for young people. This is a buzzing, well used new centre with excellent facilities and a fabulous work environment.

Computers and Adult Learning: Surely we could do more for those who need it most?

Although this is national news, places like The Kenilworth Centre have recognised the need to stay ahead of the digital revolution. 

If this data were applied directly to Kenilworth, it would mean 3,576* people have never logged on to the internet.

With the libraries closing earlier and schools closed in the holidays - how are those adults going to get online? I put this question to Martha Lane Fox on 12 July 2010 at Downing Street.

Martha agreed, saying we have 500,000 computers in schools locked up every night and school holidays.

For people like us, it's almost alien to think there are those who have never logged on. That's 16.8 per cent of the adult population (in the UK).

Tamper Proof Number Plate Screws are available from Warks Police

Here's a closer look at the tamper proof screws that are free from Warwickshire Police. It seems number plates keep disappearing from cars in Kenilworth (read that as stolen).

Baginton Village and their new Neighbourhood Watch Group

There is a newly formed Neighbourhood Watch group in Baginton Village. The group has also opened a twitter account @bagintonnw to support community engagement.

Baginton is covered in Warwickshire Police's Safer Neighbourhood Team of Warwick Rural East which is lead by Sgt Dave Kettle (who also leads Kenilworth and Warwick Rural West).

Coventry Community 19 - New Project Launched Today

Here at wiK, we are delighted to be supporting Coventry Community 19 which comes as no surprise as we already work with West Midlands Police, Fire and the Community whenever we can. 

What has changed from the events of last week, is the determination and resolve that Coventry has showed in refraining from disorder. If there was ever a sense of Community then it must be now. We are all aware that writing is difficult for some and time consuming at the best of times. And with that in mind, if each cluster of a community can produce something personal, then when all the parts are viewed from a distance - you will see something it's useful, unique and certainly worhwhile.

This seems to be the driving force behind Coventry Community 19 - talking about your immediate community and sharing. Which bring all the 18 wards together, mixing with the magic element (the glue) and we then have 19 - a recipe that Coventry might just need.

WCC Libraries Overview and Scrutiny Meeting Monday 11 July 2011 - Everyone please attend...Public, Community Groups and the Press that means you!

On Monday 11 July 2011 at 9.30am, WCC Shire Hall will host a historic meeting. It's called an Overview and Scrutiny Committee - and this one is Special. And it is, with only one real item on the agenda Changing Times – a new chapter for Warwickshire Library and Information Service (Agenda).

The report (all 317 pages of it - AVAILABLE NOW, as Tues 6 July 2011) will outline the changes to Warwickshire Library and Information Service as part of its transformation agenda. This meeting comes only three days before the WCC Cabinet meets on 14 July 2011 where recommendations may be actioned. Councillors will read the report, attend the meeting and analyse, question and conclude on each point. Remember, 16 of 34 libraries are at risk of closure.

Sources, from with the Warwickshire Library Service, tell me there is no news, just a lot of anxiety. But they (being employees) are expecting to hear that the library management are likely to recommend all 16 library closures. 

This employee has been looking at survey results and not one agrees with proposals. The majority are vehemently against where others have questioned the consultation format. He/She concluded saying WCC have been canny, stating that they want Community Libraries rather than just closing them. This may of stopped any protests - shame as libraries really are doomed. 

This post will be updated when the report is available, but judging by previous library posts, it may attract some comments in the meantime.

The Community Warden Scheme will be launched on Tuesday, 1 February 2011 with eight wardens in Kenilworth patrolling both residential and business areas.  The CWS was featured in a BBC Midlands Today report (29 Oct 2010) which contains statements from the Warwickshire Police. At the time of the press reports, the CWS was in an early stage of development There will be some planned events, in the next few weeks, where the Kenilworth people can meet and get to know the wardens.

From the owner: Our Warden Service is launching in Kenilworth in Feb 2011. Providing members with a 24 hour foot patrol and a fast response service in dealing with anti-social behaviour. Wardens will be carrying out highly visible foot patrols carrying CCTV on the streets and recreational areas of Kenilworth, acting as a visual deterrent against anti-social behaviour. The Community Warden Scheme MUST NOT be confused with the Police. Members are still encouraged to call 999 in the event of an emergency.

Young People Speak out to Save Their Youth Club in Kenilworth

Young people from Kenilworth took to the streets today in Abbey End and Talisman Square (Saturday 22 January) driving the campaign to save their youth club and collect signatures for a petition to Save their Youth Club. SIGN NOW - The Petition will end in five days time when all signatures will be collected and then submitted it to Warwickshire County Council on Monday 31 January at 12 noon.

On four evenings a week, the young people of Kenilworth head to the Youth Club in Abbey End.  They come to be with their friends in a safe place and discuss important issues to them with adults who offer them respect.  They also come to be involved in activities that help them make the right choices as they journey through adolescence.  And this week they came to plan how they can further express their dismay at the County Council’s proposal to end all funding to Youth Work across the county!

Mirie-Marie (aged 15), said she attends the club regularly to be with her friends.  She has also come to the centre to complete important school work and without this valuable resource she will have fewer places to turn to for guidance and support.  She and her friends were in Kenilworth on Saturday 22 January collecting signatures for a petition opposing the proposed cuts and have made posters to raise awareness locally.

Harry (15) agrees, 'If the youth club closed people would end up hanging around the streets and might end up committing crimes.  It’s crazy and will cost the community far more than what it would to keep the youth club open.'  Harry talks from experience - when he got into trouble with the police it was to the youth club he turned to for help. 

SIGN OUR PETITION The County Council’s proposal to end funding youth services will mean than clubs like this will not run.  They will be no funding for the professional staff team who mean so much to the young people.  The respect shown to the youth workers is evident throughout each evening and all young people talk about them with enthusiasm. 

Chloe, (14) said, 'The youth workers have helped me to change bad habits and learn more respectable behaviour.'  Rhys (16) agrees, 'We trust the youth workers.  They are open-minded and don’t judge us.  They are very important people.  They help us to feel positive about ourselves - they just help us!'

It is interesting to note that so much of what the young people say about their experience relates to the coalition’s Government’s new agenda of the The Big Society.  Ashley (18), has been coming to the youth club as a voluntary sports leader.  This experience has given him the opportunity to give something back to the community and will undoubtedly help him in his application to university.  Here is a resource where young people can truly experience the benefits of community cohesion.  Stephen (19), tells us that the young people have written to local councillors and invited them to the youth club on Wednesday 26 January, 'If they come to the club and have a personal experience of what it means to us it will mean more to them than just hearing about it from other people.'
