Warwickshire Libraries: Visits, Loans and PC Booking - last 5 years

Here are some more charts. These three are gathered from WCC Library Trend Data PC Bookings have been dropping over the last three years? A change to the booking system, users having their own PC at home or is it a cost issue? No idea, but will find out, emailing now. Remember, WiFi has only been available at Warwick and Coleshill until the last few months. Note to readers: The issue of Libaray Closures and Cuts will become quite large when the Consultation starts on 17 March 2011.

Kenilworth Library is open again as today - Monday 7 Feb 2011

As seen at University
Wait a moment - before everyone gets excited and thinks this Coffee Nation machine is installed. Sorry just an idea, read on...

The library has a very different feel to it now the large desk has been replaced with open space and the new self serve automated booths. There seem to be fewer study desks, but I am told they are now dotted around and not in the six seat cluster. There are some Warwickshire Direct booths with the Police Front Desk Services not opening until 28 Feb (when the Police Station itself closes).

All of the bookcases are on wheels, so they can be easily moved if needed. The library can then become a very interesting place to hold an event. The space would allow a large audience to enjoy something like music in these vital times when a library fights for it's survival. What is missing is something to make you relax and stay longer - maybe a hot drinks machine like this? Remember 16 hours may be cut from the opening times of Kenilworth Library. Kenilworth Library Closes (for 27 days) as Police Desk Moves in

Warwickshire County Council announces some Changes to Police and council services - so what does it mean to the people of Kenilworth? From the 28th February 2011 next year Kenilworth Library could be a little crowded as the Police Station is closed to the public and Warwickshire Direct (Kenilworth Library) will then offer a police front desk.

Public Wi-Fi – the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Following on from whatsinKenilworth's Free Wifi news, we are delighted that Paul Barfoot from Techpoint in Warwick Road has the following advice for all of us.

Public Wi-Fi – the Good, the Bad and the Ugly
We see them everywhere, people with their laptops sitting in coffee shops, restaurants, hotel lobbies, airports or Internet cafes glued to their screens, checking email or surfing the web.
Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) has made it possible for people to roam around a room or even a house untethered from a cable while still connected to the Internet. As great as all this freedom is, there are however some downsides.

Free WiFi at Kenilworth Library

It's great news that Kenilworth Library has finally installed FREE WiFi. I tested the hub today and achieved an average speed of 0.85Mb/s which compares to 6.4Mb/s at home with BT.

There is a laminated user guide at the library with a simple login screen when connected to input a password provided. Remember, any smart phone or ipod touch can connect to a Wifi source. Free Wifi is also provided at The Almanc, Starbucks, Ardens, Costa, Pizzo and many other places I have not tried yet.

Kenilworth Connect Magazine December 2010

This is a test post of Kenilworth Connect and Kenilworth Community December 2010. As you may be aware these magazines are delivered to homes in Kenilworth. But, as they are a print copy advertisers will never know if their listing is ever seen. As one advertiser said to me, I advertise on the back cover as I know no one reads it, but when it is thrown down I have a 50-50 chance of getting my ad seen.

Please take a minute to leave a comment on the base of this page to tell us what you think of these titles and if you read them.

Kenilworth seems to take delivery of Kenilworth Community, Kenilworth Connect, An Invitation to Kenilworth (rarely)  and Looklocal. And then there are newspapers The Observer and The Times Live. Many people have said to me they never read some or all of these titles, but I have no real data to support this. As you may also know wiKenilworth.com is a digital first publication with NO intention to go to print. With Google dominating  search and new technology dominating our pockets, wifi everywhere - any print publication is fading fast. Word is, the paywall will not work and advertisers are scared, worried of spending their money while getting little value for it. And with many of us having a TV with skyPLUS, we just skip the ads - no harm in that, it's our choice. Anyway, have a read:

News and how to use this site?

If you know what you're looking for, type a word or two in the search box on the right. If you are just looking, click on word from the tag cloud (this is the A-Z contents of the site - the more times a phrase is indexed, the larger the font becomes).

There is also a list of the most recent posts (also on the right). You can scroll down to the site archive and see all the 130+ posts in date order.  If something is missing - and I know it is, just let me know (I will not stop until I answer all of What's in Kenilworth?

I am pleased to say that Google are indexing these posts with Google Street View showing as limited augmented reality, for example, see the road outside the Sweet Shop.

Data from the sites tell me people are looking at pages here for just over 6 minutes and at nearly a thousand page views, the site is growing in readership quite well. Remember, most people will see pages from websites these days without ever going past the front page.  This site is written as a blog and every single word is Google searchable - try it for your self from search page on this page or any Google search box on a mobile, laptop or pc. I know Google's page rank sorts pages and sites, but look at the way this site is moving up the Google rankings - it is doing well without any SEO or clever web page techniques (and there are many).

My advice, get a message, say it and Google will find you - it's that simple and that's it. I will and can show you how. I am a teacher by trade, but have used the web since it started - I find it easy, but as I have said before, I know others do not and I will help you.

I would like to put a group together to meet in person to help everyone blog and web publish. If you want to know more email me at info@whatsinkenilworth.com My idea is to meet anywhere in Kenilworth that has free wifi - that's Costa, Pizza PizzoStarbucks and maybe The Virgins and Castle (when I check it out). BT have a great way for home users to share their wifi signal, see at www.btfon.com - see the photo on the right for a quick map.

It seems the UK is short on good bloggers. It is the new way of mass amateurisation. In other words, anyone can be anything they like armed with a mobile phone, laptop and some web access. Take a look at my Google Profile and see what Pete Cashmore is all about - ever heard of him? I thought not. To be well known bloggers you must be known as a result of doing something on the web, not as a result of something else. For example, Stephen Fry is well known on Twitter etc, but he was a comedian/actor first. Martin Lewis from the www.moneysavingexpert.com is known because of his website. Martin is a financial journalist, so he may not count either. If you want to know more see the Forbes Web 25 or even the Top 100 Blogs in the world. Look at number 3, it's www.mashable.com run by Pete Cashmore. I do not use mashable, I prefer www.digg.com as Kevin Rose blogs and videoblogs about how he's done it all, see kevinrose.com.

Also, remember any text that is blue is a link to something else, for example, the word 'augmented reality' above links to the Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augmented_reality which describes what that subject is all about. Great, because the key words in this digital age are clickable, searchable and linkable - and if you are not any of those, Google will not find you. I think of the internet these days as Google because at at 63-90% of a market share (it depends where you get these percentages - just Google Market share for yourself).

If I have not bored you already - head on over to The Mike Downes Page and see some of the books I've read and ideas I have. See you there.
